In specific crops such as peas, beans, viticulture, and young agricultural crops, significant damage is caused by pigeons, starlings, and other wildlife. Traditional methods like bird scarers and bangers have limitations such as noise pollution and habituation among birds, which reduce their effectiveness.

Purpose
Both Flanders and the Netherlands are experiencing significant damage to fruit and vegetable crops from wildlife. The aim of this project is to develop a generic technological platform that can be applied in both regions and is suitable for different types of crops. The successful implementation of a bird scaring system will lead to higher yields and greater certainty for both farmers and consumers.
Solution
Goossens Malderen, Avular, Datacation and Qualified are joining forces to tackle this problem using drone technology. Through a phased approach, a system is being developed comprising a drone, motion detection sensors, and a deterrent mechanism. The project includes the construction and testing of a prototype that can operate automatically and prevent habituation in birds. Partners such as Flanders Make and Fontys University of Applied Sciences are providing support with technological choices, field tests, and the development of a business case. Key innovations include AI algorithms for target species detection, randomisation of flight patterns, integration of deterrent mechanisms, and automatic control of the drone by an external operator.
