In this minor project, students worked on a smart solution for future food supply. They developed a modular and automated cultivation system that allows crops to grow in layers above each other – ideal for urban environments with limited space. The aim was to design a system that can supply fresh produce year-round, with minimal environmental impact. Think smart sensors, climate control, and data analysis for optimal growing conditions.

What has been realised?

The students have built a working Vertical Farm demonstrator that shows how technology and sustainability go hand in hand. The system uses sensors to monitor and adjust climate and lighting conditions, ensuring optimal crop growth. Thanks to its modular design, the system is scalable and applicable in diverse urban contexts.

What have they learned?

The project group has learned how automation, sensor technology, and data analysis can be combined in an agricultural application. They have gained experience in designing a controlled cultivation space, programming climate controls, and analysing growth data. Furthermore, they have gained insight into how innovative technologies can contribute to sustainable food production in an increasingly urbanising world.
